Panel data of prisoner counts by state, sex, and jurisdiction from decennial national censuses (from 1880) and yearly Bureau of Justice Statistics prisoner series (from 1977). With summary statistics for sex-ratio distributions across states.

• summary stats: descriptive statistics for the prisoner sex-ratio distribution across states over time
• panel: panel data of prisoners by state, sex, and jurisdiction class, 1880-2010. The sex-ratio field (male prisoners per female prisoner) included in the dataset has been top-coded with 99999.
• 2010 source, and subsequent sheets: source data tables used in constructing the panel dataset
