U.S. nationally representative statistics on causes of injury are available through the annual National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). The first year of this survey was 1992. The 1992 NHAMCS data became publicly available in 1994 both through a summary publication and through a public use data tape of the survey data. In the NHAMCS, the metric for counting injuries is injury-related visits to hospital emergency departments. NHAMCS survey description, questionnaires, and data are publicly available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NHAMCS codes causes of injury using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM).

First NHAMCS emergency department survey publications:

  • McCaig, Linda F. (1994). National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: 1992 emergency department summary. Advance data from vital and health statistics; no 245 (dated March 2, 1994). Hyattsville, Maryland, National Center for Health Statistics.
  • National Center for Health Statistics (1994). Public Use Data Tape Documentation, 1992 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (dated September, 1994). Public Health Service Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hyattsville, Maryland (available, with data, here).

CDC publications with primary subject NHAMCS data on injury-related visits:

The Early NHAMCS Injury Causes Dataset summarizes causes of injury, by sex, for persons ages 15 to 44, for the years 1992, 1992-1995, and 2001. Causes of injuries have been grouped and ranked by summary headings in the ICD-9-CM, and then further grouped and ranked across closely related headings. NHAMCS data for 2001 and subsequent years can be usefully compared to annual NEISS AIP injury data, for which full-year data first became available in 2001. These data can also be insightfully compared to widespread claims about the leading cause of injury to women.
