In recent scholarly literature, preoccupation with discursively manipulated representations and lack of compassion for human suffering has fostered celebrations of criminality as resistance to the hegemonic normative order; transgressing, or alternatively, expanding boundaries, or, more ambitiously, engaging in transversal poetics; creating a dissenting space and a counter-discourse; and revealing the importance of complex, ambiguous, and multivocal discourses and narratives for theory.^ This is not how most prisoners understand what they have done and what they are experiencing.
