United Nations’ Surveys of Criminal Justice Systems: the Data

face of a prisoner

The United Nations has periodically surveyed criminal justice systems worldwide. Data from these surveys are available online in a variety of formats. To make these data more readily accessible and more easily linked to other data, here are several structured datasets derived from the corresponding United Nations Survey on International Crime Trends. These crime survey datasets can be linked to the Adapted Walmsley Prisoner Dataset and other international socio-economic datasets via a country / jurisdiction crosswalk.

Datasets

CTS2 provides all the data from the underlying survey. CTS9 and CTS10 only provide counts and sex compositions for police, prosecutors, judges, prison staff, and prisoners. Subsequent U.N. crime trend surveys collected criminal justice staff counts (police, prosecutors, judges, prison staff) by sex. That data, however, apparently has not been released.
