Authorship of the State of the Prisons

face of a prisoner

While John Howard is the named author of the The State of the Prisons of England and Wales (1777), insightful Howard biographers have recognized that John Aikin, Richard Price, and others contributed greatly to drafting and revising the text.^ England (1973) convincingly argues that Aikin and Price’s political position as Dissenters created the risk that, if their contribution to The State of the Prisons became known, that work would become enmeshed in broad sectarian conflicts. Sectarian tensions were evident in responses to Howard’s obituary in Gentleman’s Magazine.
