Scholarly Literature on 1 Corinthians 15:33

face of a prisoner

Thiselton (2000), Winter (2001), and Wright (2003) all note that 1 Corinthians 15:33 is placed at a central point in Paul’s letter. Winter (2001) argues that the communicative practices that structured normal competition for success in Corinth were inconsistent with Paul’s Christian preaching. Yet under-appreciation for the larger textual history of 1 Cor. 15:33 seems to have prevented Winter (2001) and other insightful scholars from seeing the relationship of 1 Cor. 15:33 to Menander’s depictions of seductive communication. 1 Cor. 15:33 occurs within a triad of citations from Greek literature set out in the form of a diatribe.^ That position gives 1 Cor. 15:33 additional poignancy in relation to verbal practices.
