The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, v. 67, p. 862, records that John Howard gave a copy of The State of the Prisons in England and Wales to the Royal Society on May 8, 1777. The publication date for the volume is 1777. It was thus published early in 1777.

The volume given to the Royal Society is recorded as being a quarto.
