In Terence’s Eunuchus, Phaedria buys a eunuch as a gift for Thais. The cost of the eunuch was said to be twenty minas, but the cost of the eunuch and an Ethiopian slave girl was also said to be twenty minas.^ In any case, these were extravagant gifts. Barsby (2001) states, “In real-life Athens, a skilled adult slave cost only three to five minas.”
