Books published in the 18th century, widely known in the public sphere in England during that century, and discussing lawful punishment in detail include Beccaria (1764), Blackstone (1765-1769), Eden (1771), Hanway (1776), Howard (1777), and Paley (1785).

Jeremy Bentham’s 18th-century work on punishment did not attract substantial attention until the nineteenth century. Bentham (1778) was first published in French in 1811 and in English in 1830. Bentham (1780) was largely ignored until 1802.
